Blossum is the Ventriloquist

Blossum is a Ventriloquist.jpg

You know, mine is the secondary voice in this partnership. Though I do have some clever ideas on occasion, my function is that of Assistant to the Director. I’m to drive the car, navigate the route, find the parking space. My opposable thumbs nominate me to type the script. But I’m really the puppet. Blossum is the ventriloquist.

Mommy:        “So, what’s on your mind today Blossie?”

Blossie:          “The theme is Do Today. Not tomorrow. Today.”

Mommy: “What does that look like, Divine Dog?”

Blossie: “Take a look-see…”

“First thing in the morning, I burst outside with excited anticipation. I sniff, I listen, I follow my inner urge to revisit every corner of our garden for riches I have failed to notice in previous explorations. True, I have lived here for over 5 years, so it seems I must know this space like the back of my paw. Nevertheless, I have discovered there are always nuances to reveal, riches to uncover.”

“Humming ‘Who Let the Dogs Out’ to myself, I wander over to the potted fern and dig in the soil, my long nails reaching deep. I’m hoping to retrieve the chewy I snuck out of the house and buried, imagining it has now achieved the perfect bouquet. Voila! My persistence is rewarded and I drag out my prize, a diminished version of its former self, but all the better from the mud marinade. Hooray!! I have successfully trained myself to celebrate the victories, large and small.”

“Do Today today. Leave tomorrow for tomorrow. Granted there are gonna be a few big tomorrows, but we’re not there yet. It’s only 2:45 in the afternoon and the sun is fading fast.”

“So sniff the day-old poop for clues to the meaning of life, soak up the warmth of the setting sun, uncover a treasure you forgot you buried, and hang close by your loved ones…they just might drop the most delicious morsel of the day.”

Ilene Starr

Ilene Starr was born in Los Angeles, California, escaped to the Pacific Northwest in 2012 and has never looked back.

At the tender age of 61-3/4 years, after dreaming about having her own dog for decades, Ilene finally got her first dog when Blossum, basset hound, landed in her life and changed everything.

Ilene and Blossum’s first collaboration was a blog called Blossum the Divine Dog, a travelogue of profound, hilarious and deeply touching experiences which occurred in Portland, Oregon during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Then the book, Blossum the Divine Dog, took shape.

Blossum The Divine Dog may be summed up like this: “How I survived the Covid-19 pandemic guided by a gifted basset hound who possesses a wacky sense of humor, a reverent spirituality and lots of opinions. “
