Blossum Branches Out

Blossum Branches Out.jpg

Before Blossum, before Duncan, before Facebook, before email for that matter, there lived inside me a tiny dormant seed, waiting to sprout at that perfect moment when the light hits just right, the stars are in alignment and the droplets of live-giving water foster the beginning of life.

For years and years…and years I’ve been writing, planning, dreaming about sharing my work with you…putting it out into the world. Since I was a kid I wrote little stories, took creative writing classes, fantasized about writing children’s books. Always the stories included creatures…dogs, cats, bugs, goats, manatees.

“Zipper’s Tales, The Musings of a City Cat,” was one of my first serious endeavors. Written with a cat I had in a previous life, I even shared a few pieces with some friends. They seemed to like them well enough.

I have a manilla file that has moved with me wherever I’ve gone for the last 30 years. In it I have typewritten manuscripts, napkins with time-worn, barely legible writing, torn corners of paper…each with ideas for writing projects I’ve wanted to pursue.

There were all kinds of reasons why I hadn’t taken this longing of my heart very seriously, a number only dwarfed by the number of excuses I had for why I didn’t have a dog. And you know how that ended up!

“I’m too busy,” I’d tell myself. “I’m afraid I’d suck” was another favorite.

Then….the pandemic. A curse on society…and a blessing in disguise for me.

May of crazy 2020, Blossum The Divine Dog is born!

I went from a social media virgin to daily Instagram and Facebook postings, enthralled with the experience of sharing Blossum with the world. I’ve committed to write a weekly blog where I can share the hilarity, love and joy of life with a Basset Hound. Blossum, my muse, is an inspiration I could have only dreamed of. We have over 2300 Instagram followers and equal exposure on Facebook, all because I just can’t keep Blossum to myself.

And now, our next chapter….we have been published on Creatures the animal-focused arena of the writing platform Medium. Real writers publish on Medium! I submitted my first story and it was accepted. I was told I am now one of Medium’s writers! Holy crap! Really?

Blossie and I have so much we want to say and share with the world. We have now been given another forum in which to do that.

All I can say is Wow! Thank you for coming along with us. It means the world to me!

The story on Medium is a compilation of a few others you’ve read on my blog. Here’s the link to check it out.

Ilene Starr

Ilene Starr was born in Los Angeles, California, escaped to the Pacific Northwest in 2012 and has never looked back.

At the tender age of 61-3/4 years, after dreaming about having her own dog for decades, Ilene finally got her first dog when Blossum, basset hound, landed in her life and changed everything.

Ilene and Blossum’s first collaboration was a blog called Blossum the Divine Dog, a travelogue of profound, hilarious and deeply touching experiences which occurred in Portland, Oregon during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Then the book, Blossum the Divine Dog, took shape.

Blossum The Divine Dog may be summed up like this: “How I survived the Covid-19 pandemic guided by a gifted basset hound who possesses a wacky sense of humor, a reverent spirituality and lots of opinions. “
